According to the Old Bailey this was a return to the classical tradition and that Roman artefacts including coins depict her as having her eyes uncovered. It was only after the Renaissance that she was shown a blindfold - the first known depiction is in Switzerland on a statue of about 1550.
Rather sweetly the Old Bailey claim that her &quot;maidenly form&quot; is supposed to guarantee impartiality so no blindfold is needed !!
